PT 209 Play Therapy in School Setting
This course provides a comprehensive overview of the application of play therapy within school environments, focusing on the unique needs and challenges of working with children in educational settings. The course will explore various aspects of play therapy, including its use with children with Special Educational Needs (SEN), the integration of play therapy into school settings, and effective collaboration with teachers and parents.

Course Description:

SEN and Play Therapy:
Understanding the role of play therapy in supporting children with special educational needs. This section introduces the process of play therapy for SEN children to understand how students with special educational needs change and grow.

Play Therapy in School Settings:
Examining the practical implementation of play therapy in schools. This includes creating a therapeutic environment, selecting appropriate play therapy tools, flexibly applying play therapy techniques, and aligning therapeutic goals with educational objectives.

Working with Teachers and Parents:
Strategies for building effective partnerships with teachers and parents to support the child’s emotional and academic development. This includes communication techniques, collaborative goal setting, and involving caregivers in the therapeutic process.

The Relationship Between Schools and Play Therapists:
Exploring the dynamics of the relationship between school staff and play therapists. This section highlights the importance of mutual understanding, respect, and collaboration to create a supportive environment for the child’s growth and development.
Through a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical applications, students will develop the skills necessary to effectively conduct play therapy in school settings and work collaboratively with educators and families. The course will include case studies, hands-on activities, and role-playing exercises to enhance learning and practical application.

Mr. Lau Ping Hei (RSW, RPT-S™)
Mr. Lau Ping Hei is an experienced registered social worker and play therapist. He has been a supervisor of a school-based social worker team for a number of years. His training and expertise make him a very unique professional in the social service sector. Mr. Lau is also a part-time lecturer at the university, imparting his professional insights to aspiring learners. Mr. Lau has two beautiful daughters. His fatherhood has enriched his experience in parent education class. Mr. Lau’s interest lies in brewing coffee, a delightful hobby that contributes to maintaining a balanced work-life style.

Play therapy credit may be awarded to graduate students enrolled in a graduate mental health program or individuals who hold a graduate mental health degree in counselling, marriage and family therapy, psychiatry, psychology, or social work.
