PT 105 Working With Parents in Play Therapy 

The Parent Consultation in Play Therapy course focuses on equipping participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively engage and collaborate with parents in the play therapy process. Participants will learn how to provide guidance, education, and support to parents, helping them better understand their child's play therapy experience and promoting positive changes in the parent-child relationship. Through case studies, role-plays, and interactive discussions, participants will enhance their ability to conduct effective parent consultations in the context of play therapy.

 

This course provides a comprehensive understanding of the theoretical foundations also  and practical application of these evidence-based approaches, which aim to improve parent-child relationships and promote the overall well-being of the child.

Upon completion of this course, participants will have developed the skills and knowledge necessary to conduct effective parent consultations in the context of play therapy. They will be able to engage and collaborate with parents, enhance the parent-child relationship, and support positive outcomes for children in play therapy

Course Objectives:

I.Understand the role and importance of parent consultation in play therapy

  1. Define the purpose and goals of parent consultation within the play therapy process.

  2. Explore the theoretical foundations and research supporting the inclusion of parents in play therapy.

  3. Recognize the potential benefits and challenges of engaging parents in the therapeutic journey.

 

II. Develop effective communication skills with parents

  1. Enhance active listening and empathetic responding skills when working with parents.

  2. Demonstrate the ability to establish rapport and trust with parents.

  3. Adapt communication strategies to meet the unique needs and cultural background of each parent.

 

III. Provide psychoeducation to parents about play therapy

  1. Explain the underlying principles and benefits of play therapy to parents.

  2. Educate parents about the role of play in children's emotional development and healing.

  3. Address common misconceptions or concerns that parents may have about play therapy.

 

IV. Collaborate with parents to support the therapeutic process

  1. Involve parents in goal-setting and treatment planning for their child's play therapy.

  2. Provide parents with strategies and resources to support their child's therapeutic progress at home.

  3. Foster a collaborative and empowering relationship with parents, promoting their active participation and engagement in the therapeutic process.

 

V. Address challenges and resistance in parent consultation

  1. Identify potential barriers to effective parent consultation and develop strategies for overcoming them.

  2. Handle parental resistance or reluctance to engage in the play therapy process.

  3. Implement techniques for managing challenging or sensitive conversations with parents.

 

VI. Understand the theoretical foundations of Filial Therapy and CPRT

  1. Describe the key principles and concepts underlying Filial Therapy and CPRT.

  2. Explore the historical development and research supporting these approaches.

  3. Analyze the theoretical frameworks, including the work of key theorists

 

VII. Provide support and guidance to parents in Filial Therapy

  1. Develop effective communication skills to engage and empower parents.

  2. Educate parents on the importance of play in child development and the therapeutic benefits of Filial Therapy and CPRT.

  3. Collaborate with parents to set goals and tailor interventions to meet their unique family dynamics and needs.

Ms. Rachel Leung (RSW, RPT™)

Rachel is a registered play therapist with years of professional experience. She is dedicated to providing play therapy support for children helping them address emotional, behavioral, and developmental issues. Rachel has extensive knowledge and skills, focusing on creating a safe and supportive environment for children to express themselves through play, problem-solve, and develop healthy coping strategies. She specializes in trauma, anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, autism spectrum disorder, grief, and family problems. Rachel is also a clinical mentor, mentoring and training a new generation of play therapists. With an individualized approach and professional techniques, Rachel offers tailored therapy for each child, assisting them in achieving holistic development and psychological well-being.

 

Mr. Lau Ping Hei (RSW, RPT-S™)

Mr. Lau Ping Hei is an experienced registered social worker and play therapist. He has been a supervisor of a school-based social worker team for a number of years. His training and expertise make him a very unique professional in the social service sector.  Mr. Lau is also a part-time lecturer at the university, imparting his professional insights to aspiring learners. Mr. Lau has two beautiful daughters. His fatherhood has enriched his experience in parent education class. Mr. Lau’s interest lies in brewing coffee, a delightful hobby that contributes to maintaining a balanced work-life style.

  • Play therapy credit may be awarded to graduate students enrolled in a graduate mental health program or individuals who hold a graduate mental health degree in counselling, marriage and family therapy, psychiatry, psychology, or social work.
