PT 103 Child-Centered Play Therapy Skills I
The Child-Centered Play Therapy: Clinical Skills course focuses on the practical application of the TREE model (Tracking, Reflecting, Encouragement, Enlarging the Meaning) and Limit Setting in child-centered play therapy. Participants will learn how to effectively utilize these essential clinical skills to support the therapeutic process and promote healing and growth in children. Through interactive exercises, role-plays, and case discussions, participants will develop proficiency in implementing the TREE model and gain confidence in their ability to facilitate meaningful play therapy sessions.
Upon completion of this course, participants will have acquired the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively apply the TREE model and limit setting in child-centered play therapy. They will be able to utilize tracking, reflecting, encouragement, enlarging the meaning, and limit setting techniques to create a supportive therapeutic environment and facilitate meaningful change in children.
Course Objectives:
I. Understand the core components of the TREE model

Define and explain each component of the TREE model (Tracking, Reflecting, Encouragement, Enlarging the Meaning).

Explore the theoretical foundations and research supporting the use of these clinical skills in child-centered play therapy.

Identify the specific goals and purposes of each component within the therapeutic context.
II. Apply tracking skills in child-centered play therapy

Demonstrate the ability to observe and track a child's play behaviors, emotions, and verbalizations during play therapy sessions.

Utilize tracking techniques to accurately reflect and validate the child's experiences and emotions.

Identify and address any challenges or barriers that may arise when implementing tracking skills.
III. Master reflection skills in child-centered play therapy

Develop proficiency in reflecting the child's play themes, feelings, and inner experiences.

Utilize reflective statements to deepen the child's self-awareness and understanding.

Tailor reflections to meet the unique needs and developmental level of each child.
IV. Utilize encouragement and enlarging the meaning techniques

Apply encouragement techniques to support the child's exploration, creativity, and self-esteem during play therapy.

Employ enlarging the meaning techniques to help the child gain insight and make connections between their play and real-life experiences.

V. Implement limit setting in child-centered play therapy

Understand the importance of setting appropriate limits and boundaries in the play therapy process.

Address any challenges or resistance that may arise when implementing limit setting techniques.

Ms. Rachel Leung (RSW, RPT™)
Rachel is a registered play therapist with years of professional experience. She is dedicated to providing play therapy support for children helping them address emotional, behavioral, and developmental issues. Rachel has extensive knowledge and skills, focusing on creating a safe and supportive environment for children to express themselves through play, problem-solve, and develop healthy coping strategies. She specializes in trauma, anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, autism spectrum disorder, grief, and family problems. Rachel is also a clinical mentor, mentoring and training a new generation of play therapists. With an individualized approach and professional techniques, Rachel offers tailored therapy for each child, assisting them in achieving holistic development and psychological well-being.
Mr. Lau Ping Hei (RSW, RPT-S™)
Mr. Lau Ping Hei is an experienced registered social worker and play therapist. He has been a supervisor of a school-based social worker team for a number of years. His training and expertise make him a very unique professional in the social service sector. Mr. Lau is also a part-time lecturer at the university, imparting his professional insights to aspiring learners. Mr. Lau has two beautiful daughters. His fatherhood has enriched his experience in parent education class. Mr. Lau’s interest lies in brewing coffee, a delightful hobby that contributes to maintaining a balanced work-life style.

Play therapy credit may be awarded to graduate students enrolled in a graduate mental health program or individuals who hold a graduate mental health degree in counselling, marriage and family therapy, psychiatry, psychology, or social work.
