PT 206 Dealing with Anxiety
in Play Therapy
Course Description:
Anxiety is commonly found in school age children and adolescents. In this course, you will learn the categorizations and identification of this childhood psychopathologies. Conceptualization of such negative emotion will be under discussion. You will be introduced to various child-centered play therapy techniques in dealing with children with anxiety. Trauma-informed approaches will also be covered.
Course Objectives:

Gain a comprehensive understanding of the various forms of anxiety disorders commonly observed in children, including the diagnosis criteria based on DSM-V, their symptoms, triggers, and overall well-being

Understand child-centered play therapy approaches

Understand the play themes exhibited by children with anxiety and their beliefs

Trauma-Informed Approach: Learn principles of trauma-informed care and how they can be integrated into play therapy sessions for children with anxiety.

Building Therapeutic Rapport: Develop skills in establishing a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship with children who have experienced trauma and exhibit anxiety.

Play Therapy Techniques: Acquire practical knowledge of play therapy techniques specifically designed to address anxiety symptoms in children within a trauma-informed framework.

Cultural Sensitivity and Diversity: Explore the importance of cultural sensitivity and diversity in play therapy interventions for children with anxiety and trauma backgrounds.

Ms. Rachel Leung (RSW, RPT™)
Rachel is a registered play therapist with years of professional experience. She is dedicated to providing play therapy support for children helping them address emotional, behavioral, and developmental issues. Rachel has extensive knowledge and skills, focusing on creating a safe and supportive environment for children to express themselves through play, problem-solve, and develop healthy coping strategies. She specializes in trauma, anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, autism spectrum disorder, grief, and family problems. Rachel is also a clinical mentor, mentoring and training a new generation of play therapists. With an individualized approach and professional techniques, Rachel offers tailored therapy for each child, assisting them in achieving holistic development and psychological well-being.

Play therapy credit may be awarded to graduate students enrolled in a graduate mental health program or individuals who hold a graduate mental health degree in counselling, marriage and family therapy, psychiatry, psychology, or social work.
